The incident came to light on Monday morning after the owner of a rented flat in the Manpada locality of Dombivli noticed a strong foul smell coming from the locked apartment. According to police, the residential unit had remained locked for the previous four days, raising suspicion.
Senior Police Inspector Sandeepan Shinde said the flat owner attempted to contact the tenant after detecting the foul odor. In response, the tenant's wife allegedly sent a voicemail in which she purportedly confessed that her lover had been troubling her, prompting her and her husband to kill him inside the house.
Following the voicemail, the flat owner immediately informed the local police authorities. Police teams rushed to the location, forced open the locked apartment, and discovered the highly decomposed body of a man believed to be around 40 years old.
According to the investigating officer, the accused couple had allegedly left a bathroom tap running before fleeing the flat. Police suspect this was done to create continuous background noise and wash away bodily fluids in an apparent attempt to delay the discovery of the crime and destroy potential evidence.
The identity of the deceased has not yet been established. The body has been shifted to a government hospital for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death and assist investigators in establishing the victim's identity.
Senior Police Inspector Sandeepan Shinde said multiple police teams have been deployed to different locations and are actively pursuing several leads to trace and arrest the absconding couple.
The Manpada Police Station has registered a First Information Report against the husband and wife under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with the offence of murder. The investigation remains underway as police continue efforts to identify the deceased, reconstruct the sequence of events, and apprehend the accused.
The case has drawn significant attention because the alleged confession through a voicemail led investigators to the crime scene, where the decomposed body was recovered from a locked apartment, making it a crucial development in the ongoing murder investigation.
